Pick The Right Upholstery Fabric

Choosing the right upholstery fabric can be a tough task as there are so many options these days. It is a vital decision for the sake of longevity of your furniture. Upholstery fabrics come in different types, colours and textures. There are yarns made out of blends of different materials that increases the durability of the material. Upholstery fabrics basically fall under two categories, namely, Natural and Synthetic. Natural fabrics are preferred by people who love the softest of material in their furniture. For example, cotton, wool, linen, silk and wool. Synthetic fabrics are made of durable materials, like for example, Nylon, polyester, rayon, olefin, and acrylic.

Natural Upholstery Fabrics

Natural fabric suits the likes of less performance based furniture. It is soft but can easily wrinkle and tough to maintain. Some of the popular choices in natural upholstery fabrics are discussed below:

Cotton: It is the most widely used natural upholstery fabric. Cotton is soft and is meant to provide utmost comfort and stability. It is also the cheapest option for upholstery fabric. It is durable and does not fade. But it is not the right choice for a regular use furniture as it stains and catches dirt and dust easily.

Linen: Linen upholstery fabric is also not for regular use furniture due to the fact that it stains and wrinkles easily. It can also shrink after washing hence it requires professional cleaning to avoid the damaging effects of washing it manually. It is an affordable fabric that can make intricate designs.

Leather: It is the most durable upholstery fabric in the natural category. It is a great option for furniture that needs to look comfy, easy to clean and long lasting. Leather upholstery fabric suits people who have pets inside home. You can easily remove hair from furniture using a vacuum cleaner.

Silk: It is the most expensive option in natural upholstery fabric. It is again not suited for heavy use like a formal living room and required to be professionally cleaned.

Wool: It is sturdy and durable material that is resistant to pilling, soiling and staining. It is a good choice for regular use except that it has an odour when it gets wet.

Synthetic Upholstery Fabrics
Synthetic upholstery fabrics are made of superior material that is cheaper to manufacture. Some of the popular synthetic upholstery fabrics are discussed below.

Polyester: It is a great blending fiber that is woven in combination with cotton and linen to have a wrinkle free fabric. It retains the dye and is a popular choice for outdoor furniture.

Rayon: It is a strong and durable material that was developed to imitate cotton, linen and silk. It will wrinkle easily.

Nylon: It is a fabric that is used in combination with other natural and synthetic fibers. It is susceptible to pill and easily fades in sunlight.

Acrylic: It is an imitation for wool. It resists wrinkling, soiling and fading. Low quality acrylic can lead to pills. It is a popular choice for outdoor upholstery fabrics.

Olefin: Or, polypropylene is the second most manufactured synthetic upholstery fabric after polyester. It is durable and can be easily maintained.
