It can be a long process if you have heavy stains on the upholstery fabric. The first and foremost thing you need to consider before cleaning, is the kind of fabric used for the upholstery. 

You can get a cleaning company to do the cleaning for you once in a while. If you prefer doing the cleaning on your own, then ensure you get the right upholstery cleaners that suit the fabric type. You must not end up spoiling the fabric for which you put in your money and effort. If you are not maintaining the upholstery fabric well, it will start to pill, wrinkle and fade. Upholstery cleaners can either be store bought or made at home. Some upholstery cleaners will have harmful chemicals that can adversely affect the quality of the upholstery fabric. Apart from doing their job perfectly, upholstery cleaners should also be safe for kids and pets. More importantly, it must not ruin the expensive piece of material.

DIY Upholstery Cleaners For Different Stains

Soap foam is the best homemade upholstery cleaners for spot cleaning. To make soap foam, you need to mix 6 spoons of soap flakes with 1 pint of boiling water. Cool the mixture until it becomes a gel. Whip the soap gel in a mixer or blender until it forms foam. Pet urine on the upholstery can be really nasty. Apart from the stain it will also leave behind an unbearable stink. Urine is tough to clean as you need to ensure that it does not soak into the fabric or cushion beneath the upholstery. You may never be able to clean it out completely if the urine soaks into the furniture cushion. You need to dry the area as quickly as possible by using a vacuum or a dry cloth. 

Mix ½ cup water and 2.5 spoons of vinegar together. Dab the stain with this mix until the stain removes. Do not soak the area with this mix as it can drive the urine into the cushion. You need to dab and dry the area repeatedly to remove the stain. Adding a few drops of hydrogen peroxide will keep the odor away. Also, add a little oil to this mix to give the extra sheen for your upholstery fabric. Urine is acidic and it can affect the fabric. Once the cleaning is done, sprinkle baking soda over the area to neutralise the acid. Baking is also a natural fabric freshener and helps in removing the stink.

A Few Tips To Clean Car Upholstery

We spent a lot of time travelling in our cars and there is going to be stain on the upholstery.  The sweat and body odour can easily affect the fabrics used in the car. Homemade car upholstery cleaner requires just the basic ingredients you will find in your home. You need to mix together vinegar, club soda, detergent and some drops of essential oil to make an effective cleaner. Store this cleaner in a spray bottle. You need a vacuum or a steam cleaner, a scrub brush to clean the car upholstery fabric. Spray the cleaner on the car fabric and let it soak for five minutes. Scrub the area in small circles with a scrub brush to remove the dirt.  Spray the area with water and steam or vacuum the fabric.
